Karl Maunz began shooting competitively at the age of nine. He competed in his first Camp Perry match by fifteen. At age eighteen Mr. Maunz became an armorer for the US Army. From 1960 through 1964 Mr. Maunz was a member of the US Army shooting team.

In 1961 Mr. Maunz partnered with Mr. Melvin Smith to create the worlds first 7.62 x 51 mm caliber magazine fed M1 Garand rifle. He then went on to shoot Distinguished Rifleman using the M1 Garand rifle. Mr. Maunz received his Lifetime Master designation in 1966. Mr. Maunz has been shooting competitively off and on for over 60 years.

In the 1960’s Mr. Maunz converted M1 Garand rifles to accept M14 magazines and created the Maunz Model 57 Rifle. By 1967 Mr. Maunz developed and produced a Model 57 rifle with a lengthened barrel and designated it the Maunz Model 67 Rifle. In 1977 Mr. Maunz designed the revolutionary Maunz M14 Rifle Synthetic Stock. Utilizing synthetic resin and ballistic resistant material this stock allowed enhanced hearing protection for the shooter. In 1985 Mr. Maunz designed a version of the stock made from wood laminate with a red, white, and blue pattern on it and was featured in the 1987 edition of the Shooter’s Bible. In 1977 Mr. Maunz designed the Maunz Match Rifle Model 77. It came with 7.62 x 51 mm / .308 barrel and a 22” medium or heavyweight match barrel. In 1982 Mr. Maunz founded the American Shooters Union.  In 1987 Mr. Maunz designed the Maunz Match Rifle Model 87. It has it’s entire gas system housed in its large synthetic stock.

Currently Mr. Maunz is covering all membership costs for new members. Mr. Maunz is developing a new rifle for use in ASU and NRA matches and an exchange program will be available for the new rifles.
